Ski market increases 3.8% France Austria Italy North American Bulgaria
Crystal Holidays' annual Ski Industry Report claims that the total wintersports holiday market increased by 3.8% to 1.1m last season. "Despite the predictions from the pessimists, the ski market continues to grow," said Crystal Holidays managing director Stuart McLeod.
Passengers numbers increase, but has value?
However, although the increase in overall skiers and boarders travelling is welcome, the figures are of limited use for assessing the heath of the market. An indication of how long trips are for (weekend/ week/fortnight holidays) would perhaps provide a better guide as to how the total market has changed.
Anecdotal evidence provided from other industry suppliers has suggested that while the total number of passengers travelling may have increased in the last few years, this hides the fact that more holidaymakers are taking short, self-packaged short breaks, and in fact spending less time and money in ski resorts.
Crystal still largest tour operator
According to Crystal’s figures, the tour operator market for winter sports holidays totalled 626,000, with the breakdown as follows:
1. Crystal - 148,000 pax (23.6% share)
2. Inghams - 112,000 (17.9%)
3. Thomson - 77,000 (12.3%)
4. First Choice - 55,000 (8.8%)
5. Neilson - 53,000
6. MyTravel - 40,000
France remains the most popular destination with 36.1% of holidays taken there. It is followed by Austria (20.1%) and Italy (15.7%), with North American bookings reaching 6%. The report suggests that growth in Bulgaria as a destination indicates a higher number of entry-level skiers, but remains small overall at only 2.8% of the market.
Overall the 2005/06 season is reported to have started well with a good level of early bookings. Challenges for the coming year included a decrease in the number of no-frills seats available to ski resorts and a late Easter. "There will be a restriction on the number of resorts which can stay open that late," McLeod said.
Hits reach new high
The report also points to growth of the Internet amongst holidaymakers. In January 2005, Crystal received 265,000 hits on its website, a 69% increase on the previous year. During the same period, Natives received over 9 million hits - maybe we should be selling holidays!
